About the author:
Dilys Rose lives in Edinburgh, and is a novelist, short story writer and poet. She has published eight books of fiction and four of poetry, most recently the collection of short stories, Sea Fret (Scotland Street Press, 2022) and a poetry pamphlet, Stone the Crows (Mariscat Press, 2020). A new poetry collection, Memory Foam, is due out in 2024. Currently, she divides her time between writing and printmaking.
Dilys on the story:
"The Colour of Their Eyes" is set on a small, uninhabited island off the north-west coast of Scotland, which is home to colonies of seabirds. I chose a place dominated by birds rather than humans as, while writing the story, a preoccupation of mine was the increasingly complex relationship between species.
