5 ✩  "I started to read "Quest and the sign of the Shining Beast" one afternoon and I couldn't stop until it was finished! I had no idea what this book was going to be like and I found it very compelling... it took me on a journey and I had to read it to the end! It was a very nicely crafted book and the text flowed very well and kind of lured you in.This book was very nicely illustrated and the use of images and words combined was very unique and artistically done. I certainly haven't read a book of this type before but I really enjoyed it. It was like a spiritual experience rather than merely reading a book . I think that the reader was given a lot of scope to take their own meaning from the text and I liked that aspect very much. I liked the imagery a lot also and I could easily visualise the events as they occurred to the protagonist.This was my take on it... It's about life's journey often into unknown territory where you meet your demons and are forced to trust in your inner strength and convictions. To me, it described aspects of the nature of existence and the human search. Very spiritual . I enjoyed it and I really liked the art work and found it very poetic. John is a North Yorkshire-based artist and alumni of Sheffield Hallam University (BA Hons Fine Art and Mres in Art and Design 2002, 2003).

His principal interests as an artist are sequential photography and graphic art, landscape painting and work with a fantasy/sci-fi flavour. His Tolkien-inspired art has been exhibited at events in Oxford organised by The Tolkien Society, Sarehole Mill in Birmingham, with the Sociedad Tolkien Española in Seville, HobbitCon in Germany and more recently at NazgulCon in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

In December 2014, John curated an exhibition of international Tolkien-inspired artists at Curzon Ripon Arts/Cinema venue in North Yorkshire. Also a video artist, filmmaker and writer keen on developing his curatorial skills, John is most satisfied with multiple projects to work on.
